University of Liverpool, Computing Services Department Programmer

Immediate Past Duties

June 2000 – August 2001
As a sandwich student I was employed by the Computing Services Department to evaluate methods to implement a new front end to the existing databases, that would allow the migration of the current database to other database management systems with minimal change to a new front end. Once the methods had been established it was then my duty to start to implement the new front end, and parts of the database, which it accessed. This was to be done in a fashion that could easily be understood and modified by other people once my placement, had finished. I also needed to consult with the users of the existing system to find out their requirements for the system and to devise ways to improve on the old system.
October 2002 – May 2003
RMS customisation – Customise the commercial helpdesk fault reporting system to best meet our specific needs, and link the data in RMS to current user registrations and inventory database so that RMS has consistent data with the other systems. It was also my duty to train CSD staff in the use of RMS.

Present Duties

November 2002 – Present
User Registration Processing – Data is sent to me each evening containing records of all staff and students currently in the university. It is my duty to analyse this data using some custom programs to calculate changes in the data from previous days, and change CSD’s registration database as appropriate. I then process this data each morning to make appropriate changes on each on our central services, such as Unix, W2KS, email, RMS etc….
October 2002 – Present
Monami Development and Migration – It is my duty to continue the migration of CSD’s equipment inventory, and PC Maintenance database from the Ingres Database Management System to the Oracle Database Management system. As part of the migration new front ends need to be developed that are able to access both DBMS, and we are also redesigning parts of the database where appropriate to allow easier use and analysis of the data, along with ensuring it is consistent.
January 2003 – Present
User Registration Development – There are a number of manual tasks involved in running the user registration system. It is part of my duty to develop the system to automate some of these manual processes to help reduce time for the manual processing and decrease the risk of human error. I have also been involved in creating programs and web pages to add functionality to the existing system, such as allowing users to select a new mail name. I have also been required to redevelop some existing function such as the self-registration system, and the Athens password system. We will soon be starting to migrate the User Registration System to Oracle, make some changes to the system as we do.
January 2003 – Present
User Support – One of my duties is to help users with queries they have with User Registration system, Microsoft Access, the bibliography software and CSD’s Microsoft Windows web servers.
July 2005 – Present
I now deliver 2 of the lectures of the “Designing Databases” course, which takes place 3 times a year. After each lecture there is a practical session where I am available for one-on-one help with the users on the course.
